Colourful Swirl 70

We’re going to make a colourful and good looking swirl with only a few steps!

1. Start out by creating a 800*600 document. Now go to (filter – render – clouds) so you end up with something like this.

2. Now go to (filter – pixelate – mezzotint) and select short strokes in th drop down menu!

specialeffectf2

3. Add another filter (filter – blur – radial blur) and use the following settings, do this twice! In the second screenshot you can see the outcome of this third step!

4. Add a twirl (filter – disort – twirl) with an angle of 120!

5. It looks boring right now but you have to duplicate the layer (layer – duplicate layer) and then change the blending mode to lighten! After that add a twirl (filter – disort – twirl) with an angle of -180…

6. Now it’s just time to colorize those 2 layers! So go to (image – adjustments – hue/saturation) and make sure you check the colorize box! Use the following 2 screenshots as a reference for the 2 layers! But you can always select other colors you like more!

7. This is what I ended up with! It looks strange but it’s just a nice colourful swirl and can be used for signatures, headers, banners, ads, etc…

    hey.

awsome tutorial…but do i have to create a 800*600 canvas?

  8. Admin says:

Ofcourse not, you can create this swirl effect in every size! But it’s possible that you’ll have to adjust the settings to achieve the same effect…

Do the tutorial over and over again, you must have done something wrong because other users don’t seem to have this problem… I have no idea which step you might have forgotten, I’m sorry! But thank you for the comment.

I used it as background for a CD cover!

    thnx!!!

  20. I got something different… Could it because I am using CS3 or is this tutorial based off of CS3? When looking at your PSD it appears as though your twirls, layer 1 vs layer 2, twirl in different directions… How did you get that to happen when you duplicated layer 1 to get layer 2, they should both twirl the same direction, just with different colors… I still appreciate the tutorial, very easy and eitherway very cool, I’d just to like to end up with the same outcome.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

Hello, I’m using CS3 so that’s not the problem. Just take a good look at step 5 “after that add a twirl with an angle of -180″. That’s were you make the second layer twirl in a different direction!

kindest regards and hopefully this solved your problem…

  22. SRC says:

  27. Admin says:

But how do I change the blending mode? could u plz expand on that? and how much should i lighten?

Check out this tutorial, there are no settings for the blending mode lighten, only the opacity can be changed!

    Kindest regards.

When I go to images>adjustments i can’t click on hue/saturation. I did everything like you said and I still can’t click on hue/saturation. Help?

  29. Admin says:

Hmmm, I have photoshop CS3 and you might have an older version, maybe that could be the problem? Look for a tutorial on how to change your image to black and white using your version of photoshop!

  30. Oxid says:

    very nice result,
    thank you!

  32. Admin says:

This tutorial is based off of photoshop CS3! You should read step 5 very carefully to make them twirl in the opposite directions.

  35. Vic says:

Does any one know where I might be going wrong? I cant seem to get the two layers to contrast in colour. E.g if one layer is a pink hue – the next wont make much difference no matter what colour I change it to. The example in this tutorial has different colours in it. Any ideas?

Absolutely fantastic! Very easy to follow… Despite not getting the EXACT same result as you I’m very happy with this tutorial and the backgrounds I’ve created. The steps were simple to follow unlike so many other tutorials out there that expect u to know where everything is in photoshop. Thank you so much! Do u have any other tutorials out on the net? As I would be keen to have a look.

  44. Admin says:

Ofcourse, just check out all the other categories on this website to find a lot more tutorials!

Hey, I have photoshop cs3 and i dont have the twirl effect… Is there another way to make it like “twirl”?

  46. Admin says:

If you have cs3 you can’t miss it, google it, I’m sure you can apply the twirl effect ;) !
